RECOLLECTIONS OF AN IRISH DOCTOR

by LOMBE ATTHILL

This is a book with a wide readership amongst social historians, sportsmen and doctors.  Born in 1827 to a Fermanagh-based Church of Ireland (Episcopalian) cleric, Lombe experienced his father's concerns for those in his parish, of any denomination, who were suffering from early 19th century famines and poverty.   He recorded everyday experiences of poor roads, tiny cabins, rush lights and mummers as well as wakes and other scenes. The language used, the social pecking order and other observations are a reflection of the times. Atthill was a rural general practitioner in Co. Offaly before a stint in Dublin which culminated in his becoming Master of Dublin's Rotunda Hospital and President of both the Royal College of Physicians and of the Royal Academy of Medicine.   This edition is full of fascinating anecdotes.
