Hugh records the Ireland of Brian's youth such as her people, her religious, her lands and trees, even her musical bards. Through his chapter on Brian's forebears he gives a short but comprehensive life of the King, followed by a chapter on his death, another miscellany and finally his legacy. The useful bibliography encourages further reading while also included is Mac Liag's poetic lament as set out by James Clarence Mangan. It is a must for anyone interested in this early Irish monarch whose legends even surpass the facts.
